This work was motivated by the Pieta, a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It features American singer and actress Courtney Love as she embraces an actor dressed up as Kurt Cobain, her late husband. This work demonstrates the artist’s intent to juxtapose the Virgin Mary’s grief caused by the loss of her beloved son with the wife’s sorrow caused by the loss of her husband. This situation represents his innate elaborate and surrealistic sensations in combination with “Heaven to Hell,” a message he has intentionally arranged in order to convey a social message.
American photographer David LaChapelle, often described as “the Fellini of photography”, crosses the boundaries between commerce and art in collaboration with world-renowned magazines and celebrities. Bizarre yet provocative as well as unrealistic and exquisite, his art arouses the sympathy of the general public through the stories and messages conveyed by his photographs, not just mere images.
