In his army days Lee Sea-Hyun used to be on guard at night at a strategic region near the DMZ. While the landscape he viewed through night vision appeared completely red and beautiful, it was also an unrealistic scene filled with fear and trepidation. The impression he got at that time is recreated in red and blue in his landscape paintings, bringing about an effect that overstatingly de-naturalizes the landscape.
Born in Geoje, Lee Sea-Hyun graduated from the Western painting department of Hongik University and its graduate school and completed a master’s course in fine arts at Chelsea-University of the Arts in London. His innumerable solo exhibitions took place overseas in Amsterdam, New York City, Milan, and Zurich. He took part in group shows held at Hakgojae and Plateau in Seoul and the Venice Biennale special exhibition.
